Let’s Learn Google Analytics – Lesson 4

Setting Up  Google Analytics Account

(This is a slightly modified copy of the text that accompanies a Demo available at:

You can use your standard Google account to access Google Analytics. If you don’t have an account, you can create one by going to the Google Analytics website at:

If you don’t already have an account, you can click the link for “Create Account.”

Then type in the password. Here you can see the steps you’ll need to get started with Google Analytics.

Google Analytics will first ask whether you want to track a website or a mobile app. If you want to track a website, you shouldn’t have to do anything, since “website” is selected by default. You can type in an account name of your choice. We’ll call this “Google Store.”

You can also set up your property by first naming the website you wish to track. We’ll call this “Google Store”.

Next, add your website URL. Example below uses the address for the Google Store.

You can also select your industry category. This helps Google Analytics build better reports and education that are tailored for your industry. Click the “Select One” drop-down menu. Since this example is setting this up for the Google Store, “Shopping” is selected.

You can also adjust the time zone you wish to report in.

If we scroll down, you can see a number of data sharing settings. This can help Google Analytics perform critical systems operations and allow you to control the sharing of your Analytics data. Leave these checked for now.

To get the Javascript tracking code to add to your website pages, click “Get Tracking ID.” Notice that you’ll have to accept the Terms of Service to continue by clicking “I Accept”.

Let’s scroll down to see the Javascript tracking code. Notice that this code includes your tracking ID. Once you add this code to your website pages, Google Analytics will be able to track user behavior and send the data back to your Google Analytics account.

Now, we’ll copy the code from this page and we’ll paste it into the HTML of every page of our website.

Note that WordPress may have a Plug-in which provides an automated process for including Google Analytics tracking code. But I would prefer to use a simple Plug-in which allows me to insert JavaScript code into the header of every page on my website. I use a Plug-in called as “Insert Headers and Footers”.

Once you add the code to your site, you can check the “Real Time” report in Google Analytics to make sure it’s working correctly. Real-time reports show current user activity like the number of users on the site right now.

If you need to locate your tracking code again, you can always find it in the “Admin” area.

Next click “Tracking Info.”

Then click “Tracking Code”. Your tracking code will appear in the tracking code field.

It’s that easy to set up a Google Analytics account!
